Free-Web-Site-Authentication-Toolbar-Offered-through-CUNA-TraceSecurity-Alliance

MADISON, Wis. ? A free toolbar that helps verify the authenticity of Web sites and thwart phishing attacks is now available to credit unions and their members through the strategic alliance between CUNA and TraceSecurity.

The TraceAssure toolbar is an end-user-focused solution that protects against malicious phishing, pharming, and man-in-the-middle attacks by authenticating Web sites via a ?whitelist? approach. Through this approach, credit unions, credit union organizations, and other entities register their Web sites free of charge with TraceSecurity. The technology then tracks both the domain name and the institution?s registered Internet Protocol (IP) address in order to detect fraudulent redirection at the domain name system level, making it virtually impossible for fake Web sites to go undetected.

A message then appears on the screen to inform the user if the Web site is authentic and also lists the organization?s name that owns the Web site. Participating sites that have been validated will display an ?Authenticated? notification. If a malicious site attempts to impersonate a legitimate Web site, it will fail authentication. In addition, if a malicious site were to perform a man-in-the-middle type of attack, TraceAssure would catch the IP address difference and warn the user with a ?Malicious? notice.

?Reducing fraud resulting from phishing and pharming is a high priority for all our member organizations,? said Wes Millar, senior vice president of CUNA Strategic Services. ?Created specifically for the financial services community, this toolbar can help protect credit unions and their members from potentially millions of dollars in losses.?

TraceAssure is the third component of the three-tiered TraceAssure Program. The program?s other two components are an authentication server and product training. Combined, the program is designed to prevent Internet fraud, account hijacking, and identity theft when conducting transactions online.
