BILL HAMPEL
Bill Hampel is the senior vice president of research and policy analysis and chief economist for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).
The research and policy analysis department performs market research for credit unions and state credit union leagues, maintains a comprehensive financial database on credit unions, and conducts a variety of research on financial and economic issues of interest to the credit union movement. He joined the department as an economist in 1978 and was promoted to vice president in 1985. He was appointed senior vice president in 1992.
Additionally, Hampel writes economic analysis columns that appear in several credit union publications. An expert on the economy and credit union issues, he is regularly interviewed by the media for stories appearing on national news outlets, including: Bloomberg TV and Radio, The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, The Associated Press, CNBC, Reuters, CNN, SmartMoney, Dow Jones News Service, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, and the USA Today, among others.
Prior to CUNA, Hampel was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Montana at Missoula. Before that he was an instructor of economics at Iowa State University at Ames.
Hampel served as a staff member at Navy Federal Credit Union in Virginia during a one-year sabbatical in 1989, where he studied credit union operations and carried out a variety of consulting projects.
He was on the board of directors for Great Wisconsin Credit Union (formerly CUNA Credit Union) from 1991 to 2003, serving as board chair from 1999 to 2001. He currently serves on the board of the National Cooperative Bank, which supports America's cooperatives and their members, especially in low-income communities, by providing innovative financial and related services.
Hampel is a member of the American Economic Association and the National Association for Business Economists and holds a doctorate in economics from Iowa State University.
