KATHLEEN O. THOMPSON

Kathleen Thompson is senior vice president and associate general counsel for regulatory compliance and legislative analysis for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). As such, she focuses on increasing compliance information to leagues and credit unions, and on providing assistance to CUNA’s lobbyists in assessing the impact of legislation in Congress on credit union operations.

Thompson has represented credit unions before the National Credit Union Administration, the Federal Reserve Board, the Treasury Department, the Federal Trade Commission, and other federal agencies for more than 25 years. She also appears regularly before credit union groups to discuss current congressional and regulatory events and to present compliance seminars.

In the fall of 1996, she headed CUNA’s efforts to get the Credit Union Campaign for Consumer Choice up and running, and worked exclusively on the campaign and passage of H.R. 1151, the Credit Union Membership Access Act, until November 1997. Before that time, she headed CUNA’s regulatory affairs program and served as deputy director of CUNA’s governmental affairs division.

Prior to joining CUNA in 1980, Thompson was government relations counsel for the American Bankers Association (ABA), concentrating on regulations and legislation involving trust, securities, and tax law. Previously, she assisted ABA’s economic advisor, writing testimony on a wide variety of issues and specializing in the laws governing competing financial institutions.

Thompson holds a bachelor’s degree in government and economics from the College of William and Mary, a master’s degree in public administration from George Washington University, and a law degree from Georgetown University.
