Letters to Congress

Daniel A. Mica's Thank You Letter to the Blue Dog Coalition for Meeting with Him to Discuss Credit Union Issues and the Issues that CUNA is Advocating on Their Behalf Before the 109th Congress

May 25, 2006

The Honorable Joe Baca
U.S. House of Representatives
328 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Baca:

My thanks to the members of the Blue Dog Coalition for meeting with me May 10 to discuss credit unions and the issues that the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) is advocating on their behalf before this Congress.

To recap briefly, I focused on three issues before credit unions: Maintaining the credit union tax exemption (and banker attempts to remove it); conversions of credit unions to mutual savings institutions, and pending legislation in the House loosening federal regulation of such conversions, and; the importance of modernizing credit union regulation, particularly in giving credit unions more flexibility in providing business loans to their members, and updating credit union net worth (capital) requirements.

I also wanted to assure you that I listened carefully to the questions and comments of the Blue Dog members in attendance, and I have shared them with a number of my colleagues within the credit union movement. It is my intention that lines of communication between credit unions and your offices become as clear and active as possible – as soon as possible.

My thanks again to those attending the May 10 meeting of the Blue Dogs to discuss credit union issues. Certainly, if I may be of any further service to you, or answer any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly, or Kate Prible, CUNA manager of legislative affairs, at your best opportunity.

Sincerely.

Daniel A. Mica
