State Governmental AffairsWhat is the National Conference of State Legislatures? The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) was founded in 1975. It is a bipartisan organization dedicated to serving the state lawmakers and their staffs across the country. To be a member of NCSL, an individual must be an elected state official or a member of their staff. NCSL offers many services to its members including research, publications, consulting, meetings and seminars. NCSL reports that its staff answers more than 16,000 questions from state lawmakers annually on a wide array of issues from AIDS to taxation. CUNA’S Role With NCSLCUNA attends the NCSL’s meetings and follows their issues and discussions closely. This information is shared with state credit union league government affairs staff, and national trends and strategies are developed. CUNA staff provides comments and input to NCSL’s Financial Services Standing Committee on issues that affect credit unions. In coordination with the state credit union leagues, CUNA maintains a national profile on behalf of credit unions and ensures that key members of NCSL are aware that credit unions are concerned and active on state issues. CUNA, in coordination with the state credit union leagues, hosts a credit union booth at NCSL’s annual meeting each summer. CUNA staff, with several state credit union league lobbyists from across the country, take this opportunity to spread the credit union message to the thousands of state lawmakers that visit the booth each year.
