Hispanic Market Survey

Credit unions are making progress in serving the Hispanic market. In 2004 CUNA surveyed credit unions to measure their level of interest in serving this market. And in 2006, with help from the National Credit Union Foundation, CUNA repeated and expanded its survey. What follows are the results. CUNA’s Hispanic Resource Center Advisory Group hopes credit unions find the following data both useful and thought-provoking.

In 2004, only 6% of credit unions had Hispanic outreach programs in place and another 13% planned to start a program within a year. Two years later, 9% of credit unions have an outreach program in place and another 10% plan to start a program within a year.

While the number of credit unions having a program or in the process of starting a Hispanic outreach program remains largely unchanged from 2004, one of four credit unions with more than $200 million in assets already has an outreach program and up to 15% more are in the process of starting one. That’s the good news—the larger the credit union, the more likely it is to have potential Hispanic members and the more likely it is to have an outreach program.

“We are encouraged that credit unions with significant potential Hispanic members already have outreach programs,” says Danielle Chatfield, chair of CUNA’s Hispanic Advisory Outreach Group.
