Sen. Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., has sent a note of gratitude to credit unions for their support expressed to him in introducing the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA, S2957) on May 1. Calling the communications by CUNA members a “groundswell of support,” Lieberman stated there is “no doubt” that the support of credit unions indicates a “real opportunity” to approve legislation.

The complete text of the senator’s note follows:

Dear President Mica:

I want to extend a note of gratitude to your members for the ground swell of support they have expressed since the introduction of the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA). Credit unions are a critical component of our nation's financial landscape. Throughout the credit crisis plaguing our financial sector over the last ten months, credit unions have been among the few lenders in the financial industry demonstrating the resiliency and strength to continue lending to both consumers and local small businesses.

There is no doubt that with the depth and breadth of support from the membership of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and their account holders, we have a real opportunity to approve legislation which will positively affect the micro-level economic conditions in communities across America. I look forward to working with CUNA and its members to move this legislation to eventual passage by the Senate.

Sincerely,
Joseph I. Lieberman
